One of the biggest worries parents share with me before a family session is that their kids won’t cooperate.
I completely understand.
As a mom, I know how unpredictable (and fun!) little kids can be.
But here’s what I always tell parents:
They don’t have to.
Of course, we’ll take a few beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera. Grandparents love those, and I know you will too.
But if you ask my families which images become their favorites months (or even years) later, it’s almost never those.
It’s the laugh that caught everyone by surprise.
The tiny hand reaching for yours.
The way your daughter tucked her face into your shoulder for just a second.
The bear hug no one planned.
Those are the moments that tell the real story of your family.
Kids Were Never Meant to Sit Still
Children are naturally curious.
They want to race through the grass, collect rocks, twirl in circles, ask a hundred questions, and stop to admire every tiny flower they find.
I don’t see those moments as distractions.
I see them as childhood.
That means I don’t spend our entire session asking your children to smile at the camera.
Instead, I’ll gently guide your family with simple prompts.
We might go for a walk, play a game, whisper something silly, or simply snuggle together.
Sometimes I’ll have Mom and Dad swing a little one between them, race to see who can get to me first, or tell everyone to squeeze in as tightly as they can.
Those little prompts create genuine reactions instead of forced smiles.
I’m constantly watching your family instead of the shot list in my head.
I’m watching for the glance between siblings.
The way your child instinctively reaches for your hand.
The giggle that happens because Dad whispered something ridiculous.
Those little moments can’t be posed.
They’re simply noticed.
We’ll absolutely create beautiful portraits.
But the moments you’ll treasure most are usually the ones no one planned.
What Family Photos with Young Kids Really Feel Like
Parents are often surprised by how relaxed family sessions actually are.
There’s no pressure to make your child perform.
If someone needs a cuddle, we pause.
If a toddler wants to explore for a minute, that’s okay.
If we need a snack break, we’ll take one.
Whether we’re photographing your family in Emmett, Eagle, Boise, or somewhere else in the Treasure Valley, I want your session to feel less like a performance and more like an evening spent together.
That’s usually when the magic happens.
Your Job Is Not to Have Perfect Kids
I’ll never forget one little boy who wanted absolutely nothing to do with family photos.
He stayed tucked behind his dad’s legs, clutching a little stick he’d found, completely unsure about the camera.
His parents kept apologizing, convinced we weren’t going to get a single good photo.
So we slowed down.
We walked.
He proudly showed me every rock and stick he discovered like he’d found buried treasure.
Dad scooped him onto his shoulders.
His sister started making him laugh.
Little by little, he forgot there was even a camera there.
By the end of the session, he was running through the field, smiling from ear to ear.
Some of my favorite images from that evening happened because they simply enjoyed being together.
I’m looking for connection.
Comfort.
Joy.
The way your family loves each other.
My job isn’t to make your kids behave.
It’s to notice the beauty in who they already are.
Connection Matters More Than Perfection
When I look back at photos of my own kids, I don’t find myself thinking about whether they smiled perfectly for the camera.
I remember what they were like.
The way they fit in my arms.
The way they laughed.
The little expressions that disappeared far too quickly.
That’s what I want for the families I photograph.
Not a gallery full of perfect smiles.
A collection of images that brings you right back to this season of life.
Because years from now, your children won’t remember whether they smiled perfectly.
They’ll remember how it felt to run through the grass.
To hold your hand.
To laugh with Dad.
To snuggle into your shoulder.
That’s the feeling I hope your photos bring back every time you look at them.
Because your life is worth remembering, just as it is.
